Resin jewelry doesn’t ask for much — but the little it does ask for makes a real difference. Treat a piece right and it’ll stay clear and glossy for years. Ignore a few habits and it’ll dull, yellow, or come apart at the seams far sooner than it should.
Keep it away from water
Resin is water-resistant, not waterproof. A little rain won’t hurt it, but regular soaking will.
Over time, water works its way into the tiny seam where the resin meets the metal — that’s how earrings end up separating from their hooks. Chlorine and salt water are harder on it still, and hot shower steam adds heat into the mix too.
The habit worth building: jewelry goes on last, comes off first. After the lotion and perfume. Off before the shower, the pool, and the ocean.
Keep it out of the sun — and out of the heat
Sunlight is the number one reason resin yellows over time. Good resin has UV inhibitors built in, but nothing resists it forever, and the damage mostly happens in storage, not while it’s being worn. A piece left on a sunny windowsill for a year will age faster than one worn regularly and put away afterward.
Heat matters too — skip the hot car dashboard and anywhere near direct heat. It won’t melt on a warm day, but sustained high heat can soften or warp a thin piece over time.
Store pieces somewhere cool and dark: a jewelry box, a pouch, a closed drawer.
Clean it gently
Resin scratches more easily than glass or metal, so a piece that’s been rattling around loose in a bag will look duller than one that’s been stored with care.
For everyday cleaning:
- Wipe with a soft, dry microfiber cloth after wearing.
- For anything stubborn, use a drop of mild soap in lukewarm water on the cloth — never a soak.
- Dry it completely right away.
Keep away from: alcohol, acetone, nail polish remover, and abrasive household cleaners. Any of these can damage the finish permanently.
For deeper scratches, a jewelry polishing compound on a microfiber cloth can bring the shine back — go gently and stop as soon as it looks right.
Store it properly
The single best habit for making resin jewelry last: store each piece separately, out of the light, somewhere it won’t get scratched by other jewelry.
A soft pouch or a lined jewelry box both work well. Avoid tossing pieces loose into a drawer with metal jewelry — the harder edges can scratch the resin surface over time.
The quick version
- Don’t shower, swim, or bathe in it.
- Store out of direct sunlight and away from heat.
- Clean with a soft dry cloth; mild soap and water for anything more.
- Avoid alcohol, acetone, and abrasive cleaners.
- Store pieces separately, away from harder jewelry.
Cared for this way, a well-made resin piece will stay clear and glossy for years.
